Trusted house sitters – Housesitting and pet sitting – Introduction

House sitting offers a practical alternative to traditional pet care and home security during absences. The concept revolves around mutual benefit between pet owners and house sitters. In this arrangement, a housesitter occupies a homeowner’s property and provides pet care for an agreed period of time, such as a homeowner absence. The cornerstone expectation of a ‘fair trade’ in house sitting create a peer-peer relationship that is distinctively different from that of a commercial customer-supplier.

House sitting provides value-add to the pet owner, the housesitter and the pet(s). The homeowner may take more, better trips with peace of mind and without cost of pet boarding facilities. The housesitter may travel locally, domestically or internationally without cost of conventional accommodation and instead stay in a home environment. The pet(s) get to remain in their familiar home environment and enjoy ongoing routine care during pet owner absence.

Trusted house sitters – Housesitting and pet sitting – Technology platforms

Many related technology platforms connect pet owners with house sitters. These platforms differ in membership size, geographic focus, technological sophistication, connection process and revenue model. Most platforms require both pet owner and housesitter to pay an annual subscription fee to access its platform services and any optional benefits (e.g. insurance). Many platforms provide some form of personal verification, review process, or other vetting.

Given matchmaking purpose, trusted housesitters platform members are classified as pet owners or house sitters. Pet owners – sometimes also known as Pet Parents or Hosts – create a platform listing with information about their approximate location; property amenities; number and profile of pet(s); typical pet care responsibilities; details of their intended absence (e.g. dates) and other information as they deem relevant. House sitters apply to listings that they deem attractive. Likely after a video call, both parties may commit to a specific plan.

Trusted house sitters – Housesitting and pet sitting – Is it for me?

Pet ownership is becoming increasingly popular. Per World Population Review, there are 90 million dogs and 74 million cats in the US alone. Many other countries have pet populations that exceed 10 million. Family and neighbours can care for pets for a brief period. But Pet owners may constrain, or curtail, their travel plans due to pets. Housesitting may solve that problem. It involves token cost, modest effort, and a willingness to have someone else in homeowner property. But it may offer opportunity to travel with peace of mind.

Travel costs can be prohibitive. Retirees, families, young professionals, youth may dream of adventure in national or international locations. Housesitting offers a way to travel affordably. The traveller must still pay for their own travel and lifestyle costs. But the cost of accommodation is waived. And the property may be nicer than they would normally afford. At the ‘cost’ of agreeing to perform agreed pet care and any property management tasks.
